Here are some
possible reasons why:
1.
Child becomes
less dependent on parent.
2.
Child learns
to crawl and walk away.
3.
Parents reduce
the time they
hold the child.
4.
Child has less contact
with parents and phrases.
5.
Parent returns
to older children.
6.
Parent may have
another baby.
7.
Parent returns to work.
Any of the above
can make
the learning rate
drop precipitously.

Why does reading
remain such an intractable problem?
Perhaps we are not
having the right discussion.
It is easy
to accept
short term affirmations
and temporary smiles as proof
that we are solving the problem.
Most students cooperate
until they realize that
they will be forced
to fail again.
Few remedial programs
are consistent enough.
Few programs are long enough.
It is easy
for a teacher
to be misled
by a publisher's claims
for a product.
Some products temporarily
intrigue children
and take them off
the real rote learning tasks
that would lead
to mastery.
There is a dangerous inconsistency
of teacher and parental response,
unspoken or spoken
"crisis of rising expectations."
When early success rates slack off,
this "crisis" can turn initial
warm approval of progress
into more impatient edginess
and teacher frustration.
Then the child resumes normal
protective avoidance behavior
routines.
Child goes off-task
while acting like
they are really trying.
WHY READING TEACHERS CAN FAIL
Inconsistent teacher responses
in a tutorial session.
Inconsistent
"I'll help you if I have time."
Inaccurate recording
of time off-task.
Inconsistent and human
handling of the child.
Well meaning persons expecting
a short term commitment

The above scheduling of instruction

Competing events

Easily canceled reading sections.
Substitute teachers

Their surprised reactions,
uninformed reactions,
