MAJOR PROBLEM
Q.
Why do so many persons
claim that the brain
learns more slowly
after the first few months
or age two?
A.
THE RATE OF
ORAL INPUT SLOWS
Here are some
possible reasons why:
1.
Child becomes
less dependent on parent.
2.
Child learns
to crawl and walk away.
3.
Parents reduce
the time they
hold the child.
4.
Child has less contact
with parents and phrases.
5.
Parent returns
to older children.
6.
Parent may have
another baby.
7.
Parent returns to work.
Any of the above
can make
the learning rate
drop precipitously.

Mainstream acceptance
requires reading
In an uncertain,
mobile society
children need predictable ways
to increase their sense of security.
I am a believer in early reading.
If your child doesn't read,
step up the verbal input
by 10,000 percent.
Why oral input?
Speed --
it is as fast or faster
than most readers
can read silently.
It is much faster in technical,
unfamiliar material.
Speed helps
with the reduction
of regressions and overwriting.
A small percentage
of good readers
can read faster if:
They are reading easy material.
If they are familiar
with the subject.
If they have a good reason
for reading faster.
They are not going
to be responsible
for a Tellback or a test.
Why does oral reading
help speaking?
Practicing the mechanics
of speech while reading
is easier that
practicing speech-making
and making up the speech
at the same time.
Storytelling and listening
to stories builds comprehension.
We all have oral stories
of our lives in our minds.
When listening
to stories of our friends
we are constantly making comparisons
with our story and those of others.
We can easily verbalize
those stories that are close
to our experience.
